When you are considering the type of floral arrangements that you want for your wedding day, you might decide that you want to purchase silk flowers in order to keep the arrangement forever instead of having to go through the process of drying out a bouquet of natural flowers. You also might decide that you want to create the bouquets yourself so that they are exactly to your specifications. This can be a great way to save money on your wedding.
However, in order to make sure that you are able to make the perfect bouquet, you are going to need to be able to have full control over the silk flowers, including over the stems. Here are some tips for changing the size of the silk flower stems.
1. How to Make Silk Flower Stems Shorter
Making silk flower stems shorter is an easier method than making them longer by adding an extension. To shorten a stem, you are going to want to take a pair of sharp scissors and cut the stems at an angle. This is important because it will create a point, making it much easier to stick the stems into the whatever base you have chosen. If the stem is too thick to be easily cut using normal scissors, then you are going to need to use a pair of cutting pliers.
For thick stems, simply take your cutting pliers and attach them to the stem. Move the end of the stem that you want to remove back and forth at a quick pace in order to build up friction and make the metal inside of the stem weaker. This will cause the stem to snap off at the point of the pliers. Clean up the edges and trim at an angle with the pliers when you are done.
2. How to Make Silk Flower Stems Longer
To make silk flower stems longer, you are going to want to add an extension. If you find that you need to make a stem longer, wait to add the extension until you have cut some pieces of stem off other flowers that needed to be shorter. Find a piece that is at least three inches long, or if you don't have any of that length, purchase stem extension wire from a craft store. You can even just use an unfolded paperclip if need be. Place the paperclip, wire, or stem fragment next to the stem you want to extend so that they overlap each other by at least an inch. Then, wrap the area where they overlap with floral tape, starting about half an inch above the overlap and finishing half an inch below.
